Nineteen-eighty to now. ๐
Nineteen-eighty, and I still recall the view โ
wasn't your eyes first, love, it was the cheekiest thing on you.
You were quiet, you were steady, I was already gone that day โ
a world of black and white, and you my shades of grey.
You're all white, I'm all shades of grey,
and somehow that's the reason that we've stayed โ
down on both knees, twenty-seventh of January,
September we were wed, eighty-six, and all it said โ
I'd love you in the light, and love you when it's grey.
Four little ones in four short years came along,
Jessica, Adam, Stephen, Belinda โ our whole world in a song.
When Adam's heart turned him the colour of tar,
in that ward we met a boy โ our Zachary, our fifth star.
No money in our pockets, but the Cotter hills were ours,
cardboard down the slope, the kids all laughing under the stars.
We had our first fight over dishwasher soap โ imagine that,
the garage door stayed broke four years and we just laughed at that.
Six grandkids now to spoil โ Fletcher, Annalyse and Leah,
George and Isabel and Matilda, love just grew a little dearer.
You end your texts with a bikini and never once a kiss, you cheeky man โ
I sign off mine with a kiss, and that's just who we are.
Forty years and every night we still sit side by side,
we hold hands like newlyweds, no reason left to hide.
Our white and shades of grey, come what the years will say โ
I'd marry you all over, love, tomorrow and today.
